THE SCEPTRE STORY

INCEPTION OF SCEPTRE & PATENT APPLICATIONS
During his time in orthopedic surgery residency at Dartmouth, Dr. Tim McManus began to notice a troubling and significant lack of effective treatment solutions that are specifically designed to address orthopedic implant-associated infections. This observation led him to further explore the root causes of these infections, ultimately leading him to conduct several basic science studies and file patent applications.

BASIC SCIENCE STUDIES - THE “SABER SERIES”
The SABER (Study on Agitation for Biofilm Eradication & Reduction) studies focus on addressing the challenging issue of biofilm-associated infections on orthopedic implants. Conducted at Dartmouth under the guidance of Dr. George O’Toole, these studies evaluate the efficacy of using a combination of mechanical brushing, sonic technology, and radiofrequency to disrupt and eradicate biofilms. Biofilms, which are bacterial colonies that form fortified layers on surfaces, pose significant treatment challenges due to their resistance to antibiotics and other treatment measures. The SABER studies have shown promising results in significantly reducing biofilm burden on various metal alloys commonly used in orthopedic implants, demonstrating that these methods can be more effective than traditional techniques. The results have been showcased at premier academic orthopedic society meetings, such as the American Academy of Orthopedics (AAOS), the American Association of Hip & Knee Surgeons (AAHKS), and the University of Colorado Orthopaedic Research Symposium.
